Carl Cacho: "Spark" (Back Holler Music)
The art and craft of the folk singer is a tricky one - there' been so
much of the genre, it's hard not to dip into cliche. Cacho does just that
in a couple of songs about loneliness or being out on "the road."
But when he launches into one of his story songs, like "Home Is Where
They Have to Let You In" or "Too Hot to Touch," he and
his material become different animals, fresh and vibrant, a load of fun.
"One Step Too Far," his tale of liquor-charged infidelity, may
not be fun, but it's a hell of a song, nicely dueted with Kris Delmhorst.
And the album gets a boost every time there's an imaginative guitar solo
by Kyle Shiver.
